The Perfect Spider-man Game

In response to Ben's post about what would make the perfect Spidey game, I decided to throw my personal wish list out there. This is based on what I know fans would want and what what make sense for the character. It will be difficult to cover everything without general listings, so I'm gonna be half-assed about my styling. I apologize if my grammar is off, but I'm kind of in a hurry here.

The Basics- An open world game (shocker) which takes place not only in Manhattan, but also Queens. It would feature everything that made games good in the past, including random crimes, Daily Bugle content and unlockables like costumes. A huge change would be a large Peter Parker section of the game involving an in-game clock. The biggest question mark area for me is the storyline. It could be any number of things, but I would recommend a story set in Spidey's early career, featuring several members of the sinister six and ending with their team-up. This would be a unique version of the character, with a mission structure similar to Spider-man 3's, as in multiple story arcs featuring several levels for each one.

The Gameplay- The web swinging would, by default be a slight combination of the zoomed in camera from TASM and the physics of USM. That is what I would prefer, but the developers could easily include a vast options menu, giving players control over camera placement and physics. So, in other words, you could have Spider-man 2's web swinging if you so choose. The combat would be a combination of the Arkham City style combat Beenox loves to rip off and the freedom of movement found in SM2. The animations would vary and the hits would lock on, like in Arkham, but the freedom of movement (as in, you don't have to immediately counter or hit someone) would give you the feel of Spidey. The spider sense function would work like recent Assassin's Creed titles, where after pressing the dodge button, you can choose how you want to counter. So you could hit them, jump away from them, or web them. Of course the specifics would show more variety and not sound so basic. Another point would be that you can actually dodge things like bullets easily, but your health would be low (and yes to natural body damage). The last major piece of the combat would be the web-rush mechanic. This could be built on, so that it could function in combat and would allow you to pull off some crazy stylish moves. For example, you might hold down the button and target an enemy, press the web button, target a lamp post, and release the button, causing Spidey to quickly tie the enemy to the post, in an awesome fancy animation. Again, the specifics of the controls and how this can be upgraded, are yet to be determined. That's for developers to figure out. But this would take advantage of the Spidey sense and his agility. Plus, like in TASM, you could use it to get around.

The City and Activities-The city could be built from the ground up with realism in mind. I always thought that the easiest way to build it would be in layers. First, go on Google Earth (that's basically all you need), then then map out the city's layout and the names of the streets and stuff, on a 2-D plane. Then go into street view and begin designing the general gray rectangular prisms that will one day be buildings. After that is done, add the details using street view. This will give developers all the info they need on appearance and how to keep it looking fresh and diverse. Basically, as the player, you could swing around and do all the basic things you've done in the past. Fight random crimes mostly. This could be done through random pop-ups, a police radio keeping you informed, and SM2's pedestrians with info. The random crimes would include basically everything ever done in a past game, for the most diversity. Remember saving people on boats? When was the last time you did that. Plus new things like drug deals, burning buildings, convenience store robberies, domestic violence and prostitution rings. The possibilities are endless! And speaking of hookers, this game could aim for somewhere in the upper Teen ratings. Batman's games were a lot more enjoyable, I think, because of their realism. This way the story could have more impact and be a little heavier, without all the restrictions that come from making a kids game. So characters could get killed off. The city would include indoor environments for you to interact with, like in SM2 and even feature the subways and sewers. Along with random crimes there should be story-based side missions, Daily Bugle missions from SM2 and 3 (as well as a checklist of things to photograph in the environment) and maybe even pizza delivery missions, although I never understood how no one wondered why Spider-man was delivering pizza. They know who they ordered from, so they could just call the pizza place and then mister Aziz would see that he only has one delivery boy and put two and two together. Another set of missions could include finding clues related to the crime world and then Spidey could track down drug rings or something and take over an enemy hideout. Actually, there could be a whole thing where the more crime you fight in certain areas of the city, the more the crime rate drops and the more people like you. Anyway, there would be a lot of side activities.

Peter Parker mode-A huge reason why we all love Spidey is Peter. He is what separates the web slinger from other heroes. So you kind of have to include him in the game, but in a way that's not too invasive. Basically there is an in-game clock, which is in real-time (as opposed to GTA's "a minute in the game is a second in real life) so the day night cycle isn't too fast. You live with Aunt May in Forest Hills and when  it's time for school or work or whatever you have to get there before it's too late. So be at school by eight, on Monday through Friday. When you go to one of these places there may be a mini-game or something, but it's completely optional and you can also just fast-forward the clock until it's over. The great thing about this is that you can try to fight crime and beat deadlines, but if you don't want to worry about this stuff, you can pause the clock or enter free-play or whatever you wanna call it. This lets you basically do all the usual stuff without obligations. Another big aspect is that you play as Peter. In school you'd go to classes then walk around the halls as Pete. During your lunch break you can head back out for a half hour or whatever and then come back. Even in the city you can head into an alley and switch between Peter and Spider-man whenever you want. Daily Bugle missions would earn you money instead of xp and you could spend it on clothes for Peter or new chemistry sets (used to upgrade web shooters) or even dates with MJ. Of course all this is optional, but cool nonetheless. You might get a call from Aunt May saying to pick up eggs or something and then you have to swing to the grocery store, go in as Peter, and find eggs. It's stupid and trivial, but that's what makes it so cool.

Unlockables-Using xp you can upgrade your fighting (I haven't figured out how that will work yet), you can unlock lots of different costumes for Spider-man (some with perks), you can collect comics, character bios/trophies, artwork, and you can unlock cheats. Cheats can be unlocked through collectibles or codes. Read my article on cheat codes if you want, but basically you can unlock all kinds of stuff, from big head mode, to controlling the weather, to invincibility. There would be fight arenas located around the city too. I forgot to mention that earlier. I also came up with the best Spidey costume ever... a custom one! Basically there is a editor like in Saints Row or whatever where you can choose the webs, spider design, color tint, lens shapes, etc. It'd be cool.

So there's my idea. Feel free to post some useful tips or critiques. This was made in a hurry, so again, sorry if it SUCKS. lol (V)(;,,,;)(V) -- Zoidburg Out!
